What’s better than a summer at the Jersey Shore?
While MDW usually signals the official start of summer, this year it didn’t feel like summer really arrived until last weekend. The weather has me hopeful and grateful to be spending summer in Spring Lake, the place I’ve been lucky enough to call home for most of my life.
After living in New York City for 8+ years, I can count on one hand the number of weekends I actually spent in Manhattan during the summer. The second I slammed my laptop shut on a Friday, I was headed south (usually with a crew of friends in tow) ready to escape the heat and noise in the city for some much needed salt air and beach breezes.
The Jersey Shore has long gotten a bad rap, thanks mostly to MTV’s infamous portrayal (which is not what it’s like in Spring Lake BTW). But in recent years (especially post COVID) things have shifted. A lot of seasonal renters have become full time residents, and even more city dwellers have discovered what us locals have known all along: it’s pretty magical here.
So whether you’re coming down for the Fourth, planning a summer escape, or just curious what the hype is about…here’s how to get to the Shore and do it right.
How to Get to the Jersey Shore
Getting to Spring Lake (or any nearby shore town) from NYC is totally doable even without a car. Here are the top options:
Seastreak Ferry - The Seastreak’s tagline is “The most civilized way to get there” and honestly? They’re not wrong. This is my go to method for going back and forth to the city.
You board in Manhattan at East 35th Street or Pier 11 (downtown), and in just about an hour, you’re dropped off in Highlands or Atlantic Highlands - with views of the Statue of Liberty, Verrazzano Bridge, and entire NYC skyline along the way. It’s basically a mini boat cruise, drink in hand, breeze in your hair… not bad for a commute.
Once you dock, you’ll need to grab an Uber or car service to get to your final destination (Spring Lake is about 30-40 minutes from the ferry terminal depending on traffic). Is it a multi-step journey? Yes. But is it entirely worth it? Also yes.
You can find the ferry schedule here. Pro tip: Ferries can get crowded on weekends, so plan to arrive early and grab a drink for the ride from the onboard bar.
NJ Transit - Not going to lie I still get anxious thinking about being in Penn Station in the summer watching the sweaty crowd await the track announcement like it’s the Hunger Games. That said, the train will get you there. Just bring patience and headphones.
You’ll take the NJ Coast Line to Spring Lake or one of the nearby towns (Belmar, Manasquan, Bay Head, etc). There’s a transfer at Long Branch, so when you get off make sure cross the platform and get on the next train. Once you get closer to the shore, the views turn into marshes, marinas, and beach houses so things start to feel a little more vacation mode. Check out the NJ Transit schedule here.
Where to Stay
There’s no shortage of charming places to stay down here, whether you’re into cozy B&Bs, grand porches, or rooftop cocktails. Here are a few favorites, depending on your vibe:
The Ocean House Bed & Breakfast (Spring Lake) - Think wraparound porch, rocking chairs, and coffee in hand before a morning beach walk. This historic Spring Lake B&B is quintessential shore charm - light, bright, and filled with that old school Victorian character that makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time (in the best way). It’s peaceful, walkable to town, and two blocks from the beach.
The Bentley Inn (Bay Head) - This 19 room inn dates back to the late 1800s, but inside you’ll find impeccably designed, recently updated rooms that blend coastal charm with a clean, modern aesthetic - think crisp linens, calming tones, and thoughtful details throughout. It’s the kind of place where sandy feet are welcome and you feel like you’re staying at a friend’s beach house. Just one block from both the bay and the beach, the location couldn’t be better for a quiet escape.
The James Bradley Hotel (Bradley Beach) - The James Bradley is design-forward, moody, and cool. Great for couples or friend getaways, with a sleek aesthetic, curated minibar, and lush garden area. Walkable to the beach and cute downtown spots.
The Asbury Hotel (Asbury Park) - Lively, social, and full of personality. This hotel has a rooftop bar with sunset views, pool scene, and events like live music and movie nights. Rooms are minimalist but fun - this is where you stay if you’re looking for more action and nightlife. Perfect for a group trip or anyone who wants to mix beach days with dancing at the Stone Pony.
Asbury Ocean Club (Asbury Park) - Luxury meets laid back. This is the splurge. Steps from the beach with ocean views from most rooms, it feels like a true retreat. Floor-to-ceiling windows, plush interiors, a pool deck that looks out onto the Atlantic, and one of the best hotel lobbies in the area. Chic and serene with a private club energy (in a good way).
The St. Laurent Social Club (Asbury Park) - Cool and curated. The St. Laurent feels like a shore secret you want to keep. It’s a boutique hotel-meets-social club with serious attention to detail - from the linens to the cocktail list. The pool and on-site restaurant, Judy and Harry’s, make it a weekend destination all on its own. Think: summer dinner parties, poolside Aperol spritz, and vintage Polaroid moments.
Where to Eat & Drink
Here’s a round-up of my absolute favorites you should not miss. Whether you’re fueling up before a beach day or planning your night out, this list has you covered.
To Start Your Day
Because the beach hits better when you’re properly caffeinated and well-fed.
Rook Coffee – I have to start every day with a Rook New Orleans cold brew with almond milk. It’s strong, smooth, and slightly sweet - better than a milkshake IMO. Even with multiple locations across Monmouth County, it’s always busy so I highly recommend texting your order ahead of time. You can also grab a few bottles of cold brew to keep in the fridge all weekend.
Minnow’s – Minnow’s is everything you want in a coastal cafe - delicious, friendly and effortlessly cool. I’m on a personal mission to make my way through the whole menu. Current obsessions: the Chicken Caesar Wrap and Da Burrito. It’s a neighborhood gem with great vibes, great people, and thoughtful selection of giftables - it’s the kind of place you’ll end up going to more than once in a weekend.
Capsized Cafe – Tucked away in Spring Lake Heights, Capsized has a low-key vibe and a menu that always hits. The breakfast burrito is a go to, but always look out for the creative specials. Perfect for a quick bite before the beach or a slow morning with coffee.
Nick & Son’s – These croissants are the real deal. Buttery, flaky perfection but usually gone early. Go for the almond croissant or the rosemary sourdough if you’re lucky enough to catch one.
The Scone Pony – A Spring Lake staple for scones (obviously), muffins, and cinnamon buns the size of your head. Everything is made from scratch and sells out early - go early and grab extra.
Mueller’s Bakery – Located in Bay Head, this is a true shore institution. The crumb cake is iconic, and the line out the door on Sunday mornings speaks for itself. Pro tip: grab a box for the house - everyone will thank you.
Moondog Market – Dubbed the Erewhon of the Jersey Shore, Moondog is a wellness focused market that lives up to the hype. They use no seed oils, only organic and non-GMO ingredients, and everything is seriously so good. The Ocean Blue smoothie has gone viral for a reason, but my go to is the Flaming Filet sandwich which a side of watermelon salsa and masa chips. Healthy eating that actually tastes amazing.
Best Beach Eats
Sandwiches that belong in your cooler
Tom Bailey’s Market – Need a PEC (pork roll, egg and cheese) before hitting the beach? The Hangover Helper is the move. The deli style Sloppy Joe (yes, the layered cold cut kind) is my personal favorite. Don’t skip the guac; it’s the best add-on for your cooler or post beach snack.
Pastosa Ravioli – Yes, it’s an Italian specialty shop, but don’t sleep on the sandwiches. Packed with fresh mozzarella, chicken cutlets, cured meats, and all the good stuff. A solid stop if you’re craving something hearty and authentic.
Fin’s – Order the Hawaii 5-0 and thank me later. Bonus: they deliver straight to the beach, which makes it a no-brainer for a beach day lunch.
Hoagitos – The specials are always worth checking out, but the smash burger is my go to. It’s casual, quick, and consistently good - ideal for grabbing on your way to the beach or on your way home.
Brennan’s Deli – If you’re heading to the beach in Sea Bright, this is your spot. It was recently renovated and the menu has everything from signature sandwiches to chicken salads and wraps. Easy, reliable, and delicious.
Fresh Seafood (with great non-seafood options too!)
2nd Jetty Seafood – Great cocktails, lively atmosphere, and a menu that even a seafood skeptic (hi, me) can enjoy. The Happy Spoon, crudo, and oyster shooters are fan favorites. I personally love the wedge salad and the burger with bacon jam. Always a good time.
Spring Lake Seafood – A little more low key, but super fresh and BYOB (so pack your chilled bottle of rosé). Great service, cute interior, and a solid mix of seafood and land options for everyone.
Favorites for a Night Out
For when you rinsed off the sand and need a martini
Grand Tavern – Cozy, cool, and consistently delicious. The menu is seasonal, the cocktails are strong, and it has the kind of vibe where one drink turns into three without even trying.
Amelia’s by the Sea – Take in the ocean views on the front porch with a coastal Italian menu, great ambiance, and stylish interiors. Perfect for dinner with friends or a date night. Definitely split the pork chop parm!
Charlie’s of Bay Head – A polished dinner spot in Bay Head right on the water. Great cocktails, oysters, and a solid menu that works for a celebratory dinner or a laid-back night out.
Federici’s on 10th – Low-key, local, and the kind of pizza that tastes even better after a long beach day. Sit outside if the weather’s nice.
Barnacle Bill’s – Classic, casual, and always packed. Famous for their burgers, waterfront views, and no fuss vibes. It’s the kind of place that never changes and that’s why we love it.
Anjelica’s Restaurant – A Monmouth County favorite with a loyal following, so book ahead. It’s Italian, elegant, and always full. Everything on the menu is incredible, but the pasta and seafood really shine.
Jersey Shore Institutions for a Good Time
Where the night usually ends (or begins)
Parker House – A Victorian Jersey Shore mansion turned beach bar that’s my absolute favorite place. Whether you’re grabbing sliders and pickle boats at the Raw Bar straight off the beach or dancing in God’s Basement until last call, Parker never misses. Maybe you’ll find your future husband here like I did :)
The Columns – Another beachfront mansion turned party spot, Columns is the best of both worlds. Grab a front porch table for Lobsterpalooza on Thursday nights with a view of the ocean or head inside on the weekends for live music. I’m a big fan of their Saturday happy hour with Spare Parts (IYKYK).
Leggett’s Sand Bar – Nothing hits like a frozen Miami Vice with a floater after the beach. Great bar pies, bingo nights, and late night Celine Dion singalongs make it a favorite for locals and visitors alike.
The Osprey - I spent nearly every weekend of my 20’s here alternating between the Boom Boom Room (DJs and strobe lights) and the Rock Room (cover bands and dancing). It’s definitely a younger scene, but still a packed house on summer weekends. Stop by GeeGee’s for late night eats post ‘sprey.
Donovan’s Reef – A true on-the-beach bar with live music and drinks in the sand. Sometimes it’s chill, sometimes it’s loud, but you’ll probably get a little sunburned. Worth it.
D’Jais – If you’re looking for the full MTV Jersey Shore experience, this is the place. Yes, it’s wild. Yes, it’s fun. I did in fact see Kyle Cooke DJ here last weekend, so take that as you will.
Watermark - One of the more elevated options in the area. Great cocktails with ocean views and a relaxed rooftop vibe. Ideal for golden hour drinks or a night catching up with friends.
Johnny Mac’s House of Spirits - Free pizza with every drink, holiday lights all year long, and something always going on. A little loud, a little weird, and somehow always fun.
Sweet Treats
No trip to the Shore is complete without something cold and sugary.
Jean Louise Homemade Candies – The best chocolate shop, hands down. Their sea salt chocolate bark is a must. Perfect for gifting… or hoarding.
Crazee’s Ice Cream – Big scoops, long lines, totally worth it. It feels like the kind of place you went as a kid and never really got over.
Hoffman’s Ice Cream – A Jersey Shore staple. Get the mint chip or their signature cookie dough and thank me later. Warning: the line can wrap around the building, but it moves fast.
Surfside Frozen Custard – Soft serve perfection. It’s rich, creamy, and the custard flavors rotate (plus it’s Alix Earle approved if that means anything to you).
What to Do
Beach
Spring Lake’s boardwalk is a breath of fresh air - literally. A pristine, two-mile stretch lined with benches, coastal charm, and zero neon distractions, it’s perfect for walking, jogging, or just sitting with your toes in the sand and a good book in hand.
If you’re craving the classic boardwalk experience with rides, games, and all the carnival vibes, head to Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in Point Pleasant. It’s fun, lively, and packed with everything you’d expect from a Shore boardwalk.
If you prefer a more local, traditional fair vibe, keep an eye out for the Manasquan Fireman’s Fair at the end of July. It’s a beloved community event with rides, food, and plenty of Jersey Shore charm. Also make sure to check out Manasquan Inlet, a peaceful spot for surf watching or a scenic walk. You may even catch Bruce Springsteen admiring the view here too.
Fireworks (Fourth of July 2025)
Summer wouldn’t be summer without fireworks. Here’s where to catch the best displays this weekend:
Thursday July 3rd - Asbury Park boardwalk, Manasquan Main Beach, and Atlantic Highlands marina
Friday July 4th - Long Branch Oceanfest
Saturday July 5th - Belmar beachfront
Shopping
Check out a few of my favorite shops on Third Avenue in Spring Lake:
Waterlily Shop - a beautifully curated boutique with the kind of clothes you want to wear all summer. 98% of my closet is from here :)
Seas the Day - Charming coastal shop filled with thoughtful gifts, beachy home decor, and easy pieces to wear or bring to a dinner party. Great for hostess gifts.
Terra - A calm, beautifully designed space with a mix of home goods, ceramics, and plants. Great for gifts or a little something for yourself.
Thunder Road Books - A local favorite bookstore with a smart, well-edited selection of new releases, coffee table books and kid’s picks. The staff gives great recs and it’s the perfect stop for grabbing a beach read or three.
Workout & Wellness
Five-star options to stay energized between beach days:
The Space – Focused strength training and pilates with personalized attention. It’s tough but effective, and the kind of workout you’ll actually feel the next day (in a good way).
Bask Hot Yoga – Warm, welcoming studio offering hot yoga and conditioning classes that lead you feeling stretched and refreshed.
Tandem Cycle – High energy indoor cycling classes with motivating instructors and a strong community vibe.
Pilates Method – Classic pilates reformer that are perfect for building core strength and flexibility.
Mojo Pilates – Small group classes with an upbeat pace and modern studio space.
Coastal Core – A challenging full body workout using the Lagree method. Expect slow, controlled movements that seriously burn.
Core Ritual – Also Lagree based, with a sleek studio and small class size that keeps the focus on form and precision.
Arts & Culture
Don’t miss the Spring Lake Community Theater for summer shows and events, or swing by The Stone Pony in Asbury Park - one of the most iconic music venues in the country where legends have played and local music still thrives.
